Osteochondral AutograftTransfer (OATS)

A cartilage restoration procedure that transfers healthy cartilage and bone plugs to repair damaged areas of the joint.

Osteochondral Autograft Transfer (OATS)

Osteochondral Autograft Transfer (OATS)

Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System (OATS) is an advanced cartilage restoration procedure used to treat localized cartilage defects in the knee. In this technique, a small cylindrical plug of healthy cartilage and underlying bone is taken from a non-weight-bearing area of the joint and transplanted into the damaged cartilage region. This method restores the joint surface with natural hyaline cartilage, providing better durability and function compared to other techniques. For larger cartilage defects, donor grafts (allografts) may be used. OATS is considered one of the most effective biological resurfacing procedures for deep cartilage injuries that do not respond to simpler treatments.

Restores a smooth and natural joint surface
Uses strong and durable natural hyaline cartilage
High success rate for treating localized cartilage damage
Helps prevent progression to severe arthritis

Surgical Process

01

Defect Evaluation

The surgeon carefully measures the size, depth, and location of the cartilage defect.

02

Cartilage Plug Harvesting

A healthy cartilage and bone plug is taken from a non-weight-bearing part of the joint.

03

Precise Implantation

The graft is press-fit into the damaged area to restore the joint surface with high precision.

Patient Care

Recovery Roadmap

Patients usually follow protected weight-bearing for about 6 weeks. Gradual rehabilitation begins afterward, and return to high-impact sports is generally allowed after 9–12 months depending on healing progress.

Who Needs This Procedure?

Patients with focal, full-thickness cartilage defects (craters) in the knee

Active individuals with localized pain that hasn't responded to microfracture

Patients with deep cartilage injuries that involve the underlying bone

Individuals seeking to restore a smooth, durable joint surface with natural hyaline cartilage
